On occasion, I decide to take various routes when walking through downtown.  Every time I have, I come across restaurants I didn’t even know existed in the area.

I’ve been looking for a decent Chinese restaurant in downtown San Antonio.  The food court Chinese food at the Rivercenter Mall would never suffice.  Taiwan Chinese Restaurant is a notch above the food court places and definitely worth the occasional lunch-time visit.

Taiwan CR is open Monday – Friday from 11AM to 2:30PM and has 17 choices on their Lunch Special menu.  Lunches are $5.27 each and include the main dish, rice and either an egg roll or a soup.

Have I gone mad?  I should know by now not to eat at Chinese Restaurants in the food court!

I just couldn’t help it.  They draw you in with that perfect sample on a toothpick, you taste it and it tastes really good.  But when you get the plate, it’s never like the one little sample you tried.  How do these people do it?  It’s got to be some sort of secret ancient Chinese mind trick.

Seriously, if they could replace Little Tokyo AND the other copycat Chinese place, Side Wok Cafe (See Review), with a Panda Express, though not the best either, it would be much, much better.

Yes, I understand Tokyo is in Japan and not China.  But the type of food they sell falls under the same realm (ie. Beef/Broccoli).  While they do have sushi on the menu I’ve never seen anyone order it.  Who would eat sushi at a food court?

I was warned by a friend that Hung Fong was a middle of the road Chinese restaurant.  Apparently a lot of people enjoy this place, but my friend was right.  It was a notch or two above food court Chinese food.

The way they prepare the food here is very different.  I’ve had Kung Pao Chicken in almost every Chinese restaurant I’ve visited and this recipe had vegetables in it I’d never seen in Kung Pao Chicken.  Did it make for a better dish?  It didn’t make the usual recipe any better, but it wasn’t bad.

My friend ordered a dish that he says he can’t find anywhere else.  It was called Hunan Style Rice.  I’d never heard of it before either.  It looked good and had a variety of stuff mixed in it like shrimp, pork, and vegetables, but can you call this Chinese food?

Although this restaurant was a little out of the ordinary, the food didn’t make me think that I’d make this a regular place to visit.  It’s just another restaurant in a big city.

I am so sorry I ate at this food court Chinese restaurant.  Typically, Chinese food in a food court isn’t too good to begin with, so I didn’t expect much.  But, I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed in food court Chinese food.

I’m just going to keep this simple.  I ordered Orange Chicken and it tasted like the smell of the alleyways downtown where the bums like to urinate.  I hate reporting this, but this is exactly what the Orange Chicken reminded me of.  I ate a little of the rice and egg roll and threw the plate away.

I wouldn’t say this place has the best Chinese food, but the food is decent, the portions are big, and the price is really low. It’s a good place to pick up food and go. It always seems fresh and the service is quick.

The food here is already made, you just pick out what you want to eat, similar to that of Panda Express.  So, try to go during lunch and dinner times so that the food is more fresh.

While they have a few places to sit at, I wouldn’t take a date there!  Only take cash, because that’s all they’ll accept!  ;)

Okay, so New Kung Fu’od.  Where do I start?

My last visit to this place, before last night, was about 10 years ago.  It’s not that their food is bad, it’s just that there are much better places to go.  The food is relatively cheap for the amount of food you receive.  Last night I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken dinner, and for 11.99 I got a bowl of egg flour soup, an egg roll, a wonton, and a large Kung Pao Chicken.  Two people could easily eat from this dinner.   It was a lot of food.

The food itself is mediocre.  You get what you pay for.  If you want quick, cheap Chinese food to take home, this is one of the places to go.  If I had to decide between Kung Fu’od and Grand China another local, cheap, hole-in-the-wall, Chinese food place, I would probably choose Grand China.

This is definitely not a place to take a date.  It’s more of a pick-up your order and go kind of place.  Oh, and don’t tell your date where you picked up the food from!  hehe
